Rusty Cast Iron Skillet? Here’s How To Season Cast Iron Cookware
Nothing flavors food the way cooking in a cast iron skillet does. Unfortunately, cast iron cookware does require a little effort to season it and make it rust-free and stick-free.
Here’s how to season cast iron cookware-
First, wash your cast iron skillet by hand in ordinary dish washing liquid (never in the dishwasher!). If the cast iron cookware is rusty, use a nylon pot scrubber to remove all rust. Dry thoroughly, then generously grease the inside of the cast iron cookware with salt-free grease or oil.
Place the cast iron skillet in an oven set at 200 degrees for one hour. The low heat of the oven opens up the pores of the cast iron skillet and allows the grease to penetrate deep into the cast iron. After the hour in the oven, let the cast iron skillet remain in the oven until it’s cool, then wipe out any excess grease with a paper towel and store in the cast iron cookware in a moisture-free location. You’re cast iron skillet is now seasoned and ready for use.
If your cast iron cookware is new, you may have to repeat this seasoning process several times before the cast iron cookware is fully seasoned and stick-free.
The more you use cast iron cookware and the blacker the cast iron becomes, the better.
